The Memorial Drive Landscape of Memory: Pathway Upgrades connects two other City of Calgary initiatives located along Memorial Drive: The Peace Bridge and Poppy Plaza. Ultimately, the entire length of the Landscape of Memory will be upgraded using the same system developed for this project.
Precast concrete was selected as the primary material for the pathway because of its ability to form complex shapes, its durability, and the economies of scale it affords. The new pathway armature is conceived of as a ‘kit of parts’ that can be adapted to suit a variety of experiential conditions without compromising the legibility of the overall system as a continuous infrastructure.
The interface between the public and natural realms is managed by the periodic intensification of this component system, providing opportunities for rest, gathering, and way-finding, while protecting and preserving the Bow River’s rich riparian landscape.
